Trans Fats on Labels
Trans Fats on Labels
by: News Canada
Artery-clogging trans fat is showing up in foods where we least
expect it - and in startling quantities. Did you know for example,
that the typical birthday cake mix with ready to use icing actually
contains more trans fat than 16 medium fries or 32 fast food hamburgers?
The good news is that by the end of 2005, all packaged foods sold in
Canada will be required to list the exact amount of "trans fat"
in the Nutrition Facts box, alongside the percentage of the recommended
daily value, which is zero for trans fat.
Some conscientious manufacturers
have done it already. Added Touch, for example, (a baking mix
line by Dr. Oetker) has just reformulated 25 home baking products
to be trans fat free - including its most popular cakes, icings, muffins,
brownies, and cookies. The vivid blue Added Touch packaging is easy
to spot with its new "0 Trans Fat" icon - which indicates it is
the only trans fat free baking mix line available. To avoid trans fat
in other foods, scan the Ingredients list and avoid "hydrogenated"
and/or "partially hydrogenated" oils.
